£100
Bolivia: 1872 6% Loan, a group of 12 bonds for £100 and 17 bonds for £500, some with balance certificates dated 1880 attached, black and blue respectively. Authorised £1,700,000 to subsidise the National Bolivian Navigation Company which had been formed under a government concession for opening communication between the Republic and the Atlantic Ocean. The route was found to be not navigable so the Brazilian Government granted a concession for the Madeira Mamore Railway to be built to complete the route. Years of legal wrangling made the scheme impossible to finish and the loan went into default. £45 per £100 was returned to bondholders in 1880 and the balance certificates issued to deal with any further payments of which £2 6s was paid in the following year. Bolivia refuses to have any liability for any balance outstanding. Many are VF (29).
